Muscle relaxants are not really a class of drugs, but rather a group of different drugs that each has an overall sedative effect on the body. These drugs do not act directly on the muscles, rather they act centrally (in the brain) and are more of a total body relaxant.
Typically, muscle relaxants are prescribed early in a course of back pain, on a short-term basis, to relieve low back pain associated Soma Muscle Relaxer with muscle spasms. There are several types of muscle relaxant medications that are commonly used to treat low back pain:
Carisoprodol (Soma). This drug’s dosage is 350mg every eight hours as needed for muscle spasm. Soma is typically prescribed on a short-term basis and may be habit-forming, especially if used in conjunction with alcohol or other drugs that act on the mind.
Soma, which is generically prescribed as carisoprodol, is a muscle relaxant used to treat injury and other conditions which cause muscle or bone pain. Soma is typically used in conjunction with rest and physical therapy.
Soma is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes drug addiction, allergies to meprobamate, porphyria, liver disease, kidney disease, epilepsy, or other seizure disorder may not Soma Muscle Relaxer be able to take Soma or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated this medication as a pregnancy risk category C. Soma may cause harm or birth defects to an unborn baby. It has yet to be determined whether or not this medication passes through the mother’s breast milk and affects a nursing baby. Soma Muscle Relaxer The prescribing physician should not prescribe this medication to a pregnant or nursing woman, or to a woman who is likely to become pregnant.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Soma, some of which are severe. A patient who is experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical treatment. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms which include facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require emergency medical attention include symptoms such as extreme weakness, loss of balance or coordination, paralysis, lightheadedness and fainting, fast heart beat, convulsions, vision loss, agitation, and confusion.Soma Muscle Relaxer
Other less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as headache, drowsiness, mild tremor, depression, irritability, insomnia, Soma Muscle Relaxer hiccups, nausea vomiting, or upset stomach. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a more tolerable level if the dosage of Soma is reduced.
Soma should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed by the physician. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped to avoid the potential for an overdose. The patient should never take a double dose of this medication. If an overdose is suspected, the patient should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An overdose will present Soma Muscle Relaxer with symptoms which include fast heart rate, vision problems, shallow breathing, confusion, hallucinations, muscle stiffness, lightheadedness, fainting, and seizures.
There is a risk of negative drug interactions associated with Soma. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing this medication. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter Soma Muscle Relaxer medication and herbal remedies. Medications that have known interactions with Soma include cough and cold medicine, anxiety medications, muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers, and other medications which are known to cause drowsiness.
This medication has been proven to be addictive. Patients with a history of chemical dependency should not take Soma. Patients without a history of dependency are still at risk for addiction, especially patients experiencing high levels of life stressors.
In an attempt to determine the mechanism of action of carisoprodol (Soma®) in the treatment of low back pain, a double blind study was carried out comparing its effectiveness to that of a sedative Soma Muscle Relaxer control, butabarbital (a sedative), and a placebo in the treatment of 48 laborers with acute lumbar pain. Carisoprodol was found to be significantly more effective in providing both subjective pain relief and objective improvements in range of motion when evaluated by finger to floor testing. The results of this study suggest that the effects of carisoprodol are not secondary to its sedative effects alone.Soma Muscle Relaxer
In 1989, Basmajian compared the effectiveness of cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril®) alone with diflunisal (Dolobid®), placebo, and a combination of cyclobenzaprine and diflunisal in the treatment of acute low back pain and spasm. During the ten-day study period, the combined treatment group demonstrated significantly superior improvements in global ratings on day four, but not on day two or seven. This study suggested some effectiveness of combined analgesic and muscle relaxant therapy when utilized early in the initial week of pain onset.Soma Side Effects

Borenstein compared the effects of combined cyclobenzaprine and naproxen (Naprosyn®) with naproxen alone and also found combination therapy to be superior in reducing tenderness, spasm, and range of motion in patients presenting with ten days or less of low back pain and spasm. Soma Muscle Relaxer Adverse effects, predominantly drowsiness, were noted in 12 of 20 in the combined group and only four of 20 treated with naproxen alone.Soma Muscle Relaxer
Cyclobenzaprine and carisoprodol were compared in the treatment of patients with acute thoracolumbar pain and spasm rated moderate to severe and of no longer than seven days duration. Both drugs were found to be effective, without significant differences between the treatment groups. Significant improvements were noted in physician rated mobility and in patients’ visual analogue scores on follow up days four and eight. While 60% of patients experienced adverse effects in the form of drowsiness or fatigue, these differences were not significantly different between groups, and only eight percent of patients from each group discontinued treatment.
Soma or carisoprodol is a drug with significant central nervous effects. It influences both monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes at the spinal level.
Soma is very worthwhile drug in relaxing and relieving the muscle pain. So, the people suffering for the strains, sprains, spasms or other muscle injuries usually buy soma.
Soma is prescribed frequently by family physicians, internists, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, and psychiatrists as well as other healthcare professionals.
It is an analogue of the putative inhibitory neurotransmitter gama-amino butyric acid (GABA).Though it is thought that it may have a similar action, yet there is no conclusive evidence of this.Soma Muscle Relaxer
Soma is a centrally acting synthetic skeletal muscle relaxant structurally and pharmacologically related a potentially addictive agent. Soma undergoes hepatic biotransformation to three primary metabolites: hydroxycarisoprodol, hydroxymeprobamate, and meprobamate.
It is quite effective, particularly with musculoskeletal pain. Soma may be given sometimes just to help with pain that occurs throughout the night, or it may be given on a regular time-contingent basis through the day, or on an “as needed” basis.
Soma is better accredited for acute relief of muscle pain than chronic relief as well. But it may cause some sedation. Soma does tend to lose some of its effects after being used for a little while. Soma, which has a molecular structure very similar to that of amitriptyline, sometimes, seems to be inked to weight gain also.Soma Muscle Relaxer
Soma does provide symptomatic relief for pain, but usually does not alter the underlying physiologic cause of pain. Nevertheless, drug therapies are frequently administered to CBP patients, although there are very few standardized guidelines pertaining to the types of medications that should be administered for specific pain problems.
